Lingvo Center Finland Oy
The YKI Finnish Language Exam
The YKI test is a national language exam that determines your level of Finnish according to an international assessment scale.

Who needs the YKI test?
You need it if you plan to live, work or study in Finland.

Schools and colleges hold language tests that follow the YKI level system. A YKI certificate may be accepted instead of a Finnish language entrance exam.

To apply to universities in Finland where the language of instruction is Finnish, you need a certificate showing that you have passed the YKI test (requirements vary by institution).

The YKI test is taken at one of three levels
Young woman writing in a notebook: preparing for the basic YKI level
Basic level, “Perustaso” (A1–A2)
Confirms basic knowledge of Finnish for work and everyday life. For some routes to a permanent residence permit, level A2 is enough.
Intermediate level, “Keskitaso” (B1–B2)

The most popular level. B1 is required for:

• Finnish citizenship;

• a permanent residence permit (the required level depends on the chosen application route).

It is also suitable for admission to schools and colleges.

Man studying materials to prepare for the advanced YKI level
Advanced level, “Ylin taso” (C1–C2)
C1 may speed up obtaining a permanent residence permit (conditions depend on the chosen application route). It is also often required for admission to universities that teach in Finnish (requirements vary by institution).
After you pass the exam, you receive a certificate confirming your level of Finnish.

Language requirements may change. Check Migri for up-to-date information or ask us: we will help you find out which level you need.

Despite the fact that the language is difficult to master, I have achieved a lot in this short period. I am very happy with my teacher Sofia, she explains everything clearly.
